Now in its sixth year, the show certainly has already made its mark and from May 5th to May 7th the island will be buzzing with some of the finest new works from celebrated artists and emerging talent.

This year will include first-time exhibitors from Brazil, Guatemala, Japan and Poland joining the galleries, all coming together to present pieces in a bespoke, light-filled structure, situated just east of East Harlem on Randall’s Island, Manhattan’s 400-plus acres of revitalised green space.
Organized by Victoria Siddall, Artistic Directors Abby Bangser and Jo Stella-Sawicka are also supported by a team of international independent curators: Toby Kamps, of the Menil Collection, curating the expanded Spotlight section for the first time; Cecilia Alemani of High Line Art and the Italian Pavilion 2017 at the Venice Biennale, commissioning Frieze Projects.

Tom Eccles also returns as curator of Frieze Talks which look particularly interesting with the likes of poet Claudia Rankine, MoMA’s Ann Temkin and Shuddhabrata Sengupta leading daily debates at 11.30am by the Ruinart Lounge.

With so much on show it is hard to pick out the must-sees, but London’s Lisson Gallery’s two-artist show by Anish Kapoor and Lee Ufan is a must, as is celebrated American painter John Currin’s work showing with Gagosian Gallery and Tala Madani shown by LA-based David Kordansky Gallery.
Staying on the Upper East Side will keep you close enough to the action, and The Carlyle or its neighbour The Mark are always good choices. You will be on the doorstep of more greenery in Central Park, so this trip to Manhattan might be more back-to-nature than frenetic city streets.
