With varying elevations, tight corners and narrow roads the course is the only one on the circuit not to adhere to the minimum speed rule, and the daring skills of racers set on finishing first is a sight to behold.

This year, following on from the Gran Premio de España Pirelli in Spain, the heat will be on for this race. Eyes are on Ferrari, after the February unveiling of their new SF70H 2017 car, and they will be hoping for a win after starting the season on a high following Vettel’s win in Australia.

The Monaco Grand Prix has a rich history

The Monaco Grand Prix has run since 1929 and along with the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hour Le Mans it forms part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. There will be plenty of hospitality on offer to match the course’s prestige, including Paddock Club access which bills itself as a hospitality experience grander than any other – if you tire of viewing from the water.

After the race, stay and see the city return to a calmer, though never modest, atmosphere. Try the world-renowned Hôtel de Paris on Place du Casino for old world elegance and attentive service from Lagerfeld-clad staff members, and walk the corridors that Churchill and Princess Grace once walked.

Try your luck at the very grand Monte Carlo casino, the backdrop for many a James Bond film, pop in for a bite or cocktail at the Café de Paris or simply relax and unwind at the city’s best spa, Les Thermes Marins.

If time permits why not take a trip along the coast, leaving the tiny principality behind to explore the gorgeous French Riviera. With a stunning coastline, discover quieter corners and charming communities like the medieval village of Èze, or the town of Menton, stopping for lunch as you take in the views, which are particularly breathtaking from Èze’s hilltop looking over St Jean-Cap Ferrat.

Here visit its botanical garden, marvel at the medieval ruins of its central castle and dine at the 5-star Château Eza – where you can take a luxurious suite for a romantic night’s stay and relax in the outdoor jacuzzi perched over 400 metres above the sea for truly panoramic views.

In Menton follow in Queen Victoria’s footsteps and enjoy its old town and harbour, and try the freshest of seafood on offer at the 2 Michelin starred Mirazur, with Italian influences understandably featuring given its proximity to the Italian border.

There is always plenty to explore at Monaco
