Art on the Beach at Miami Art Basel

Since 2001 America’s most important modern and contemporary art fair has called Miami its home. Originally launched in 1970 in the Swiss city of Basel, Art Basel was joined by Miami Beach and Hong Kong to host some of the most spectacular international modern and contemporary art shows that draw the world’s leading galleries, artists and collectors to them.

This December it is Miami’s turn, and the city will see 269 leading galleries showing new and significant works from leading artists, as well as showcasing the next generation of emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, films and limited edition works will be shown at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Outside, large-scale artworks, films and performances will come to nearby Collins Park and SoundScape Park.

What to expect this year

Previewing starts just before on November 30th, with the coveted VIP “First Choice” viewing starting at 11am, followed by the private preview at 4pm. The Vernissage takes place the following day on December 1st, and although all three are strictly invitation only the public opening follows soon after and remains open until Sunday December 4th.

The selection includes notable works by a number of artists including Eric Baudart, Yoan Capote, Wagner Malta Tavares and Tony Matelli.

As part of the outdoor exhibition at Collins Park The Bass will unveil its latest acquisition, Rondinone’s large-scale sculpture entitled Miami Mountain, as the museum looks ahead to its re-opening in spring 2017 after a full renovation which will add a further 10,000 square feet of exhibition space.

This year, amongst the stars of the art world, a very special musical star will be joining the crowd. Long-time art collector and queen of pop, Madonna, will be there too – for the art of course, but mainly in the name of charity. Her performance on December 2nd at Faena Forum will be raising money for her charity Raising Malawi, and given the ticket prices (for the lucky 400 attending) her cause will be well supported.

Where to stay
